In 2019, 516 vocational schools in Italy were specialized in the field of industry and handicraft, the most widespread type of vocational secondary school in the country. Additionally, 352 vocational high schools offered programs in commercial services, while 351 institutes focused on hotel and restaurant services.
Vocational high schools give access to tertiary education as well. However, they mainly focus on practical training, while technical schools offer both a practical and a theoretical preparation. Eventually, lyceums give above all theoretical preparation for university.
