Between 2012 and July 2019, 23 of the world's 50 largest banks had made public commitments to sustainable finance. A particular hike in bank financial commitments was seen after the Paris Agreement in 2015, which gave insight into the vast amount of capital needed in terms of investments into green technologies, modernization and streamlining of current technologies.
Banks have been funding sustainable projects for many years, but now many are making commitments not only to the funding of more environmentally and socially responsible causes, but also to a downturn, if not stopping of non-renewable or non-sustainable projects.
As of July 2019, the Canadian Bank of Montreal had made the largest single commitment in terms of USD of over 300 billion U.S. dollars between 2019 and 2025. The Bank of America had already hit a previously held target of 125 billion USD made in 2013, and therefore re-committed a further 300 billion USD between 2020 and 2030.
