As of January 2020, 52 percent of Italians between 18 and 34 years said that they had listened to podcasts in the previous 12 months. The results of the survey also revealed that podcasts were slightly less popular among users between 35 and 44 years (47 percent). Additionally, a poll of 2019 showed that podcasts were preferred by 17 percent of individuals, following audiobooks at 22 percent.

What types of podcasts do the nearly ten million Italian listeners prefer? Music programs were appreciated by 45 percent of users in 2019. The same trend was reported in a poll of January 2020, where news programs were the second-most listened categories of podcasts.
Access to podcasts
Most Italian users did not like the idea of paying for podcast content. In fact, in 2019, 85 percent of podcasts’ users accessed their audio content through free subscriptions, while eleven percent mixed free and paid access. Only four percent of listeners paid for a subscription or purchased the podcasts content.
