According to a survey conducted in July 2019, close to 47 percent of Japanese respondents aged 30 to 39 years old did not know that companies used personal information, such as one's online search history, purchase history or location, in order to advertise their products more precisely. People aged 60 years and older were the most likely to know about this kind of advertising. One possible explanation given by the source was that younger people took detailed recommendations for granted and were therefore less aware of data references.
