According to a survey conducted in July 2019, more than 38 percent of respondents in Japan did not know that companies used personal information, such as one's online search history, purchase history or location, in order to advertise their products more precisely. A breakdown by age groups in the same survey showed that people aged 60 years and older were more aware of this kind of advertising than younger generations.
