At the beginning of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, many soccer stadiums were closed to the public and fans were played behind closed doors. As a result, the top European soccer leagues reported major losses in revenue in the 2019/2020 season. Out of the top 'Big Five' leagues, the German Bundesliga suffered the highest losses, followed by the British Premier League. In both cases, the matchday revenue losses surpassed 100 million euros in total.
