As of August 2023, two out of five of the prime ministers in the Nordic countries are women. The two female prime ministers are Mette Frederiksen (Denmark), and Katrín Jakobsdóttir (Iceland). Sanna Marin was prime minster in Finland until the election in April 2023, when she was replaced by Petteri Orpo. Jonas Gahr Støre (Norway) and Ulf Kristersson (Seden) are the other male prime ministers in the Nordic countries. Historically, Finland has the highest number of female prime ministers with three.
Women in parliament
As of August 2023, Iceland has the highest share of women in the parliament with 47.6 percent. Denmark has the lowest with 44.1 percent.
Female candidates
Iceland was also the Nordic country with the highest share of female candidates in its last parliamentary election, slightly more than Sweden. Denmark had the lowest with only 38 percent.
