In 2018, the shipment volume of beer amounted to around 194 million cases, the highest amount among beer-like beverages.
The Japanese liquor taxation system grades beer and beer-like alcoholic beverages according to the malt extract content of a product. To avoid rising liquor taxes, manufacturers introduced low-malt (happoshu) and malt-less (new genre beer) beverages as a cheaper alternative to products classified as 'beer'.
