The majority of married couples in Japan make decisions to visit their parents or relatives together as a couple, as reported by 56.1 percent of married women surveyed in July 2022. In only around 6.2 percent of cases, husbands were reported to be solely in charge of planning visits to family members.

Original question: "Between you and your spouse, which of you decides on the following?"
Respondents were asked to select between "wife", "wife if anything", "together as a couple", "husband if anything" and "husband".
Questionnaires were distributed to respondents during individual visits and, in exceptional cases, mailed to absent households. Completed questionnaires were collected in person or submitted by mail or via the online survey system of the government.
