In Belgium, knowledge regarding HIV and Aids was rather limited in 2018. Indeed, less than half of Belgians, aged over 15, were well educated in terms of HIV. In 2018, the level of knowledge was slightly higher in the Brussels-Capital Region than in the Walloon Region. However, with 45,8 of people having valid knowledge, the Flemish Region was the least educated in the country in terms of HIV and AIDS.
Valid knowledge on the subject implies that a person identifies the use of condoms as being an effective prevention method against HIV, along with fidelity in a relationship. Furthermore, the person should reject three false beliefs: the belief that a healthy-looking person can not have AIDS, that HIV can be transmitted by embracing or shaking the hand of a person with aids, and finally, that it is transmitted by drinking from the glass of a person with AIDS.
