The size of offshore wind turbines has grown tremendously since they were first developed. In 2023, offshore wind turbines had an average rotor diameter of approximately 280 meters, up from 35 meters in 1991. It is expected that in 2030, new designs will make possible to produce up to 25 megawatts with a turbine of an average rotor diameter of over 350 meters. In 2023, the average power rating of offshore wind turbines was 18 megawatts.
Offshore wind turbine manufacturers
Some of the largest offshore wind turbine manufacturers include Siemens Gamesa, Vestas, and Sewind. Siemens Gamesa had a total installed capacity of 22 gigawatts as of end of 2022, whereas Vestas and Sewind reached 9.9 and 9.2 gigawatts of offshore capacity. Regarding newly installed offshore capacity, Siemens Gamesa and Mingyang were the companies that registered the largest volume of installations in 2022, at roughly three and 1.6 gigawatts.
Manufacturing of wind turbine components
In recent years, China has been increasing its presence along the wind energy supply chain. In 2022, the country was responsible for 57 percent of the global wind turbine nacelle manufacturing capacity and 62 percent of wind turbine blade manufacturing capacity. Europe was the second-leading region for the manufacture of wind nacelles and blades, accounting for 17 and 15 percent of the global capacity.
