Female genital mutilation (FGM) is punished by law in Belgium since 2001. Yet, in 2016, it was estimated that 26 thousand women were victims of excision or could be at risk of it in the country. The number of victims was higher in Flanders, being the region housing the most women originating from countries where such a practice is more common. Although the lowest numbers are found in Wallonia, the number of victims was higher than 5.5 thousand women and girls.

The "at-risk" group is calculated based on the prevalence of girls who are mutilated in their country of origin and their age. Not all "at-risk" girls will be victims of FGM, especially when taking into consideration the impact of migration on this practice. However, they remain a target group for prevention actions from social and medical services.
