Over the course of the 2023 financial year, Australian flag carrier Qantas carried a total of 45.73 million passengers. This represents a significant increase from the past financial years and can be attributed in part to the recovery from 2019/2020 coronavirus outbreak.
Capacity, nearest competitor, and total revenues
In the same year, the airline had 29.37 billion seat kilometers available in total and the company has also witnessed a substantial year-on-year decrease here. Meanwhile in 2019, Qantas’ largest competitor, Virgin Australia, carried 25.5 million passengers and had 51.2 billion seat kilometers available. For Virgin Australia, this represents steady year on year growth in both areas.
In the same financial year, Qantas recognized total revenue of 5.93 billion Australian dollars, displaying a noticeable year on year decrease. Virgin Australia enjoyed total revenue of 5.83 billion Australian dollars in the 2019 financial year.
Consumer satisfaction
Qantas’ domestic customers are among the most satisfied. In a 2019 survey, 84 percent said they were happy with the airline, compared to 80 percent of Virgin Australia customers. In the same survey, both airlines enjoyed similarly good scores from their international customers; 80 percent of Qantas passengers and 77 percent of Virgin Australia’s customers said they were satisfied with the airlines. For comparison, 87 percent of Singapore Airlines said they were happy with the company’s international product.
