In 2018, there were no forested area authorized by the government to be used for transmigration settlement. Until 2018, the Indonesian government had authorized almost 0.9 million hectares of forest for this purpose. The transmigration program was an initiative by the Indonesian government to resettle people from densely populated areas to less populous areas of the country to ease population density. Indonesia has had one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, with more than 74 million hectares of rainforest burned or degraded in the last 50 years.
