Global greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector increased by roughly 80 percent between 1990 and 2019, to a record high of 8.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e). Although transportation emissions plummeted some 15 percent the following year due to COVID-19-related restrictions, they rebounded in 2021 to 7.84 GtCO₂e. Transportation is one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
