Corporate debt as a share of GDP in developing countries has been steadily increasing over the last 20 years, growing from around 51 percent in the year 2000 to over 135 percent in 2022. These values include debt from domestic credit issued by financial institutions, in the form of both loans and nonequity securities.

The source defines domestic credit to private sector as: "financial resources provided to the private sector by financial corporations, such as through loans, purchases of nonequity securities, and trade credits and other accounts receivable, that establish a claim for repayment.
Low income countries are defined by the source as countries with a 2015 gross national income (GNI) per capita of 1,025 U.S. dollars or less.
Middle income countries are defined by the source as countries with a 2015 GNI per capita of between 1,026 and 12,475 U.S. dollars.
