In 2018, there were around 30 same-sex couple civil unions registered in New Zealand, a decrease from the number recorded in 2005. The first civil unions in the country were celebrated in 2005, and the first same-sex marriages were celebrated in 2013.

Before 1999, marriage data were extracted on the basis of 'date of marriage'. From 1999 onwards, marriage and civil union data are extracted using 'date of registration'.
