In fiscal year 2020, the return on capital employed of UltraTech Cement was about 11 percent. That year, the Indian company sold over 81 million metric tons of cement and clinkers.
In 2018, the cement production capacity of India stood close to 460 million metric tons. The increase in cement demand in fiscal year 2019 was about 13 percent, which was the highest growth since 2010.
The high demand came from the infrastructure sector due to government's focus on metro, roads, airport and irrigation projects. Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana for low-cost house construction, demand from rural areas was also significant.
