As of October 2023, approximately 20.66 thousand Japanese residents were living in Malaysia, marking the lowest of the observed period. Numbers have been steadily increasing throughout the past decade until they peaked in 2020 at close to 31 thousand residents. The statistic, which is based on the information gathered by Japanese diplomatic missions abroad, does not include descendants of Japanese emigrants (nikkeijin) who do not hold Japanese citizenship. People with multiple citizenship are counted.
