As of July 2020, LPG bottling capacity across the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India amounted to around 1.7 million metric tons per annum. Overall, the bottling capacity across the country stood at around 20.3 million metric tons per annum.
Under the government's Ujjwala scheme to provide free and clean cooking fuel to every household, the south Asian country became the second largest consumer of LPG across the globe. The aim of the scheme was to replace traditional cooking fuels in the rural areas such as firewood and cow dung as they contribute to environmental degradation and also have adverse health effects.
