Opinion on same-sex marriage in Italy 2019

In a survey conducted in Italy in 2019, the majority of respondents stated to be in favor of same-sex marriage. However, 23 percent of Italian respondents declared to be against same-sex marriage in 2019. In Italy, same-sex unions are recognized since June 2016, which guarantee most of the rights as for married couples. In 2018, young Italian respondents considered the civil partnership law as a social achievement.

LGBT rights

In 2019, most Italian respondents declared that gay, lesbian, and bisexual people should have the same rights as heterosexual people. However, attitude of Italian respondents towards the rights of transgender people were more contrasted. Indeed, the same year, 42 percent of respondents declared that transgender people should not be able to change their civil documents to match their inner gender identity.

Forms of discrimination

According to another survey, in 2019, sexual orientation and gender identity were among the most widespread types of discrimination in Italy. More specifically, among the most common forms of discrimination related to sexual orientation and gender identity, Italians indicated being gay, lesbian, or bisexual as the most widespread one, followed by being transgender and intersex. Unsurprisingly, only seven percent of respondents stated to have friends of acquaintances who were transgender.
