Most preferred PC game genre South Korea 2023

According to a survey conducted in South Korea in 2023, around 32 percent of PC gamers stated that their most preferred PC game genre fell under role-playing games (RPGs). Other popular genres included shooters and simulation games. The South Korean gaming industry was valued at multiple trillion South Korean won in 2021, with further growth forecast.

Playing games at PC bangs

In South Korea, most gamers play neither at home nor at a friend’s residence. Many gamers go to “PC bangs” where they can play games with their friends as a way to socialize while having access to high-quality internet. Since the majority of PC gamers enjoy playing at PC bangs, their preferred genres of computer games are closely aligned with what is most-played at PC bangs. 

E-sports and regular gamers in South Korea

The most popular genre as of 2023 is role-playing (RPG), which is quite popular for both computer and mobile games. Although the majority of the leading games in e-sports competitions in South Korea are classified as real-time strategy games, such as League of Legend or StarCraft 2, regular gamers tend to prefer RPG games. Shooting games are, nonetheless, extensively beloved by both regular gamers and the e-sports scene.
