Nitrogen is the most commonly used fertilizer nutrient in the European Union's (EU-28) agricultural industry in terms of volume. In 2018 and 2019 respectively, some 11.8 and 11.5 million metric tons of nitrogen fertilizer was used to encourage optimal crop production on Europe's farmlands.
