Since the Great Recession, the ratio between net debt and earnings has been increasing among the 1,000 largest U.S. companies, with the 25 largest nonfinancial companies increasing their ratio by 0.5 percent points between 2010 and 2017. This compares to a decline of -0.3 percentage points in the period between 2002 and 2007.
