In 2022, around 17.85 kilograms of fentanyl were consumed in Japan for medical reasons, the lowest amount of the past decade. Consumption decreased steadily over the last ten years, starting at around 25.47 kilograms in 2013. Fentanyl is used in Japan as medical narcotic for people suffering from great physical pain, such as late-stage cancer patients.
