In a survey conducted in 2018, regarding whether or not New Zealanders can speak an Asian language, 28 percent of the respondents, aged between 30 and 39 years old, said they could speak an Asian language. This also included a basic level of fluency in the specified language. Comparatively, only 11 percent of the respondents aged 50 years and older stated they could speak an Asian language. This survey was conducted by the Asia New Zealand Foundation, an organization which prides itself on providing insights on Asia to the people of New Zealand.
