SoftBank Corp.'s revenue FY 2015-2023
The revenue of SoftBank Corp. amounted to around 6.08 trillion Japanese yen in fiscal year 2023, which was an increase of about 170 billion yen compared to the previous year. SoftBank Corp. is one of the main mobile phone operators in Japan and operates as a subsidiary of SoftBank Group Corp.
The current state of the mobile communications market
A breakdown of the company’s revenue by segment shows that the consumer segment is the largest segment of the company. Mobile communications make up the lion’s share of the consumer segment. In the mobile communications market, SoftBank Corp.’s main competitors are KDDI Corporation, which operates the mobile carrier brand au, and NTT Docomo, which engages in the mobile communications business as a subsidiary of NTT Corporation. Data on the distribution of mobile phone subscribers show that NTT Docomo has held the highest market share in recent years. The competition further increased when Rakuten Mobile, Inc., which had previously operated as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), became the country’s fourth major mobile carrier in 2020.
Adapting to digitalization
While SoftBank Corp. is mainly a telecommunications company, it has expanded into other business areas to adapt to the changes in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry brought about by increasing digitalization. As one of these measures, SoftBank Corp. added the internet company Z Holdings to its subsidiaries in June 2019. The acquisition of Z Holdings, which operated the popular platform Yahoo in Japan, expanded the business portfolio with internet-related services, such as e-commerce and online advertising. Further measures include the growth of PayPay, a QR code payment system, and the integration of LINE Corporation, which operates LINE, the dominating messenger app in Japan. Z Holdings, LINE Corporation, and further subsidiaries merged in March 2021 to form LY Corporation.
