Most of the Italians living in another European country stayed in one of the countries members of the European Union before May 2004. The EU 15-group consisted of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom.
In total, 5.7 million Italian people were reported living abroad in 2021, of which over three million stayed in Europe.
Data refer to the Italians reported in the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (A.I.R.E.). They display the share of people out of the total number of Italians living abroad.
