Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden were some of the European countries with the highest volume of household debt relative to their disposable income, as they had a ratio of over 180 percent. According to the source, some of the different types of debt included in the figures are loans, specially mortgages, as well as consumer credit.
Country indebtedness levels
For ten of the fifteen European countries included, the level of household indebtedness outweighed the amount of disposable income, with Denmark seeing the highest household indebtedness to gross disposable income ratio of approximately 228 percent in the third quarter of 2021. Slovenia had one of the lowest indebtedness ratio, along with Hungary, and Poland.
Debt per adult in Europe
In Europe, the value of debt per adult varies considerably from an average of around 10,000 U.S. dollars in Europe to a much higher level in certain countries such as Switzerland. Debts can be formed in a number of ways. The most common forms of debt include credit cards, medical debt, student loans, overdrafts, mortgages, automobile financing and personal loans.
