The United States' share of global foreign direct investment fell from approximately one-half to one fifth between 1973 and 2000. By comparison, the EU's share was almost forty percent in both years, while the decline in the U.S.' figure was largely offset by an increase in FDI from the developing world, a well as other developed countries such as Japan.
