Number of mafia environmental crimes in Italy 2023, by region
In 2023, Campania recorded the highest number of environmental violations in Italy, with almost 5,000 felonies. Considering the entrenched presence of mafia crime in that territory, it can be argued that many of them were perpetrated by mafia organizations. On a national scale, 14 percent of the illegal activities against the environment occurred in this region. Other southern regions that registered a high number of environmental crimes were Sicily, Apulia, and Calabria.
