Spain’s Christmas sweet consumption per person has been fluctuating around 0.8 kilograms over the last few years, with Spanish turrón (traditional Christmas nougat) hitting over 60 percent of its yearly sales exclusively during the holiday season.

In 2019, Spain was the country that featured the second-largest food budget for the holiday season in Europe at around 173 euros. Food expenditure in Spanish households at Christmas was projected to reach around the same amount, second only to gift expenditure, which was estimated at approximately 240 euros.

Meaty Christmas!

Suckling lamb was the most expensive type of meat during the Christmas season in Spain in 2018 at approximately 15 euros per kilogram of meat. The price of fresh meat in Spain maintained at a steady average of 6.75 euros per kilogram in 2019, although it skyrocketed in December and reached an average price of 7.87 euros per kilogram. Fresh meat was most expensive at traditional shops, where a kilogram of fresh meat cost 7.98 euros in 2020.
