Share of empty houses in metropolitan cities in Italy 2018

In 2018, the Southern Italian city of Palermo, Sicily, registered the largest percentage of empty houses in Italy. About 14.6 percent of all houses in the city were not inhabited, meaning 41.6 thousand empty dwellings. Moreover, in the Northern Italian city of Bologna 11.6 percent of all houses were uninhabited (24 thousand), whereas the share in Genoa was equal to 10.7 percent. In Rome, there were 122 thousand empty houses, which made up 9.4 percent of all dwellings in the Capital.
