Luxury tourism was estimated to represent the smallest share of the total internal tourism revenue in trending travel destinations in 2020, according to a Statista study on luxury travel and tourism amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, this segment could account for less than 10 percent of the total internal tourism revenue in Mexico, China, and India, while it could reach about a third of the industry's revenue in the United States.

Internal tourism revenues are defined as the total expenditures of international and domestic tourists in each country within a period of time, usually one year. It does not include expenditures of tourists from the country traveling abroad.
A country's luxury tourism revenue is defined as income generated by domestic and inbound international high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) through the acquisition of consumer goods, services, and valuables for and during trips. HNWIs have net assets over one million U.S. dollars.
