Physical domestic partner violence cases in Flanders 2009-2022

The Flemish federal police registered a steady number of physical domestic partner violence cases from 2009 to 2022. In fact, 9,000 to 12,000 cases were reported each year. The highest number of cases was reached in the most recent time period, when more than 11,000 cases were reported. On the other hand, in 2013, the Flemish police registered the lowest number of cases, just under 10,000. In 2022, 12,200 cases were recorded.

When looking at police numbers, it is important to acknowledge the fact that these numbers relate to solely the reported cases. Furthermore, physical violence is just one type of domestic violence. Sexual, economical, and psychological violence against women and men are also reported in Belgium.
