Number of slaves imported into Haiti in 1788

In 1788, over 29.5 thousand slaves disembarked at the various ports of St Domingue (present-day Haiti). These 29.5 thousand slaves were assigned a value of almost 62 million livres, giving an average of almost 2.1 thousand livres per person. Of these arrivals, almost 15.7 thousand were adult males, which is equal to 53 percent of all slave arrivals. In contrast, adult males outnumbered adult females at a rate higher than two to one, as just over seven thousand females arrived in this year (equal to 23.9 percent of all slave arrivals).

In addition to adults, almost seven thousand child slaves arrived in St Domingue in 1788; although the gender ratio of child slaves was lower than that of adults, 62.5 percent of child arrivals were male, compared to 37.5 percent female. In terms of overall slave arrivals, male children made up 14.4 percent, while female children made up 8.6 percent.
