In 2018, outbound tourism was more popular than domestic tourism among travelers in Germany across all age groups. Outbound travels were significantly higher among travelers aged 15 to 34 years. By contrast, 18.86 percent of travelers aged 65 years and older stated that they traveled outside Germany in 2018.

The source adds the following information: "This collection covers national tourism. Data is collected by the competent national authorities of the Member States and is compiled according to a harmonised methodology established by EU regulations before transmission to Eurostat. Most of the time, data on domestic and outbound trips (where "outbound tourism" means residents of a country travelling in another country) is collected via sample surveys. However, in a few cases the data are compiled from border surveys. Surveys are generally conducted on a monthly or quarterly basis."
