Fossil CO2 emissions of El Salvador, the smallest and the most densely populated country in Central America, reached 1.23 metric tons per capita in 2017, a level that has worsened in comparison to 2016, when emissions amounted to almost 1.21 metric tons per person. The country's fossil CO2 emissions have been slowly increasing between 2015 and 2017, however, El Salvador is one of the countries with the lowest fossil CO2 emissions per capita in Latin America and the Caribbean.
