Drivers in urban or suburban areas would be willing to increase their car budget by 13 percent in order to purchase a self-driving car. It is expected that fully autonomous vehicles will enter the urban and suburban fleet much sooner than rural areas because such vehicles require high speed Internet as well as mappings of the surrounding area. The questionnaire of 5,538 consumers was part of a larger survey conducted by Capgemini Research Institute. On average, consumers would be willing to spend 11.5 percent over and above their current budget for cars for a self-driving car, and one fourth of respondents said they would not be willing to pay a premium.
