Italy: opinion on an extraordinary commission against racism 2019

In November 2019, 59 percent of respondents in Italy were in favor of the establishment of an Extraordinary Commission to combat forms of racism, anti-Semitism, incitement to hatred, and violence. Moreover, 15 percent of the Italian individuals involved in the survey were against the Commission, whereas 15 percent affirmed that they would not have voted.
At the end of October 2019, the Italian Senate voted in favor of the establishment of a special committee to combat racial hate. The motion passed with 151 votes in favor, 98 abstainers and no vote against. The Italian parties Lega, Forza Italia, and Fratelli d' Italia decided to abstain. The Commission was proposed by the Senator Liliana Segre, Holocaust survivor. Thus, the committee was also given the name of "Segre Commission".
