The majority of Russians as of November 2019 considered the main reason why the Berlin Wall fell was the Soviet Union's political course change and weakening of its influence before the collapse of the country, as per 17 percent of survey participants. The second most popular answer was that the decision of Mikhail Gorbachev, the president of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) at the time, and the illiteracy of the Soviet government led to the fall.
