France: carbon dioxide emissions 1970-2023

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from energy in France fell roughly seven percent in 2023, to 254.6 million metric tons. Since 1990, France has cut its annual CO₂ emissions by more than 30 percent.

France’s carbon footprint

As of 2023, France was the fourth-largest c arbon polluter in the European Union, behind Germany, Italy, and Poland. Despite being one of the most polluting member states, France has one of the lowest per capita GHG emissions in the EU, at roughly 5.8 metric tons.

Sector emissions in France

Transportation is the largest source of emissions in France, with road transportation emissions emitting some 120 MtCO₂ in 2022, the second-highest volume in the EU. The energy industry is often a considerable source of emissions in many countries, but due to France’s use of nuclear energy, emissions from this sector are relatively low.
