The Tanakh, also known as the Hebrew Bible, is the central text of Judaism and the foundational text of the Abrahamic religions. The Tanakh is split into three sections (from which it takes its name) with 24 books in total. These are; the Torah (Laws), with five books telling the history of the Israelites from creation until the end of the Exodus; the Nevi'im (Prophets), with eight books telling the stories from the Israelites' retaking of Israel until the Babylonian Captivity; and the Ketuvim (Writings), which is 11 books of miscellaneous sacred writings and stories that were not included in the Torah or Nevi'im.
The Bibles
The contents of the Tanakh are almost identical to the Old Testament in the Protestant bible, and make up a large portion of the Old Testament in other Christian bibles, however it has been split into 39 or more separate books rather than 24. The New Testament is consistent across the various Christian denominations. In addition to the stories covered by the Tanakh, the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Orthodox Tewahedo (the denomination most popular in Eritrea and Ethiopia) also include additional writings that are not in the Tanakh, or that were previously included but later removed. The Tanakh and Christian Bible are also revered in other Abrahamic religions, but they are not considered the only central texts; other examples of important central texts include the Quran in Islam, the Kitáb-i-Aqdas of the Baha'i Faith, and the Book of Mormon in Mormonism.
The Septuagint
The removed writings largely come from the Septuagint, which was the Greek translation of the Old Testament from around the 3rd century BCE. Initially these writings were revered, but their importance diminished with time as they were not considered to have been written by a biblical figure. The removed writings have come to be known as the Apocrypha, and this word has developed negative connotations in recent centuries. Early versions of the Protestant Bible did include some writings from the Septuagint, as well as the Vulgate (a 4th century CE Latin translation), however these were separated into a different section between the Old and New Testament, and were later removed to be in line with the Tanakh.
