Europe: renewable energy capacity investment by sector 2019

Renewable energy technologies generate energy from resources naturally replenishable in a human time scale and thus, foster the transition towards decentralization of energy production and decarbonization. Investment, be it in the form of asset finance of utility-scale projects from internal company balance sheets, loans, equity capital, or financing of small-scale projects, is crucial for the development of new capacities and expansion of the sector.

With more than 24 billion U.S. dollars in capacity investment, solar PV was the leading technology in Europe in 2019. On- and offshore wind energy also received high interest through investments with 18.9 and 7.5 billion U.S. dollars respectively.

Renewable energy investment in Europe

In 2019, Europe came third after China and the United States in terms of new investment in renewable energy globally. In the same year, a total of 13 European countries attracted investments of over one billion U.S. dollars. Spain registered not only the second largest investment value but also the highest annual growth rate at almost 25 percent compared with 2018.
