The global production capacity of ammonia is expected to expand from approximately 240 million metric tons in 2023 to nearly 290 million metric tons by 2030. This forecast capacity growth is attributable to about 113 planned and announced ammonia plants worldwide that are scheduled to begin operations by 2028, primarily located in North America and the former soviet union.
Ammonia: base of nitrogenous fertilizers
Ammonia is a basic chemical and a building block used in the production of many everyday products, with its main application being the manufacture of agricultural fertilizers. Ammonia can be applied on its own as a fertilizer, although it is most commonly converted into other nitrogen products such as urea or nitrates. During the 2022/2023 farming season, the global demand of nitrogen fertilizers reached nearly 110 million metric tons. The forecast global demand for nitrogen fertilizers in 2027 is 115 million metric tons.
Ammonia production in the U.S.
The United States is one of the world’s leading producers of ammonia, tied for second place with Russia, with China in the first place. In 2023, the production of ammonia in the U.S. was estimated to total around 14 million metric tons. Ammonia was produced by 17 companies at 36 facilities in the U.S. at that time. CF Industries, a manufacturer of agricultural fertilizers based in Illinois, was the company with the largest ammonia plant capacity in the U.S., followed by the Canadian company Nutrien and Koch Industries Inc.
