During 2020, 955 migrants died or went missing in the Italian Central Mediterranean Sea. The number of people who died or went missing attempting to reach Europe declined compared to the previous years, in particular compared to the years between 2014 and 2017.
In 2020, 34 thousand migrants landed on the Italian coasts. The number of landings in Italy peaked in 2016. Afterwards, the amount of arrivals decreased.
