In 2019, 29.8 million Christmas trees were sold in Germany. This was a slight increase on previous years. Christmas trees are still an indispensable part of the holiday season for many households, especially those with families, but on the other hand, consumers are also concerned about the environmental impact that real Christmas trees have. While growing and transporting them to various locations has its consequences, a real tree isn’t toxic and can be recycled when Christmas is over.
Holiday cheer
From a retail point of view, the Christmas trading period is one of the most lucrative of the year for many countries, not just Germany. Here revenue from retails sales has been increasing year after year, amounting to over 101 billion euros in 2019. Typically, German consumers begin their Christmas shopping between the end of November and the middle of December. Most planned to stop by specialty shops or stores to buy a Christmas gift. When looking at the import volume of Christmas-related products to Germany, fresh Christmas trees were the most imported product, followed by decorations for them.
Deck the halls
While Germany also makes its own Christmas decorations, it relies on a host of supplying countries. First and foremost, one of these is China, followed by the Netherlands and Vietnam. In fact, over 13.3 thousand tons of products were imported from China to Germany in 2019.
