In 2022, Greece and Slovakia were some of the European countries where the non-financial corporations were the most indebted. These figures indicate the debt of the companies in that country as a ratio of their financial assets. Iceland, Slovakia, and Poland also had a debt ratio of over one, which indicates that the value of their debt was higher than that of all of their financial assets. High debt rates generally increase the vulnerability of the private sector to changes in economic conditions, interest rates and inflation. However, they can be justified for capital intensive economies.
