During the period between 2012 and 2016, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China received 17 percent of mutual legal assistance (MLA) requests sent to China's authorities and the most requested information of them was investigation and gathering evidence, with 306 cases in total. There are several authorities in China eligible to deal with mutual legal assistance requests. While the Ministry of Justice of China is the leading central authority for accepting and transferring MLA requests, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Supreme Peoples’ Procuratorate also deal with MLA requests independently under certain circumstances.
