How do people pay in Norway? The most common payment method as of Spring 2020 was by payment cards. Indeed, 88 percent of all payments in Norway at that time was finalized through payment cards, and the most common type of card was with a debit function.

Do people still pay with cash in Norway?

   Payments made with mobile phone climed up to become the second most common payment method in Norway in 2020. The previous year, cash was still the second most common payment method inthe country, but was only used in a small share of all payments. The trend in cash use in the country has gone steadily downwards for the last decade and accounted for around 12 percent of all payment transactions in the country in 2018.

Mobile payments

Mobile payments did not appear to be very common but are becoming more popular. For example, mobile payments were by far the most common peer-to-peer payment method as of spring 2020, used for almost 80 percent of the transactions. The most common one was Vipps, which is a payment app developed by the Norwegian bank DNB. The app had around 107 thousand daily active users in Norway as of January 2020.
